Antique Mourning Brooch

Queen Victoria made black jewellery fashionable after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. This is why it is widely associated with the Victorian Era, although mourning jewellery dates back to the 16th Century.

This circular mourning brooch is somber and intricately beautiful at the same time. While serving as a ‘memento mori’, it also catches the eye with its complex design and pearl sat in the centre.

The underside of the brooch shows some signs of wear, but this is to be expected of a piece of this age. The underside also bears a hallmark in the centre.
